The ramparts of the town of Dourdan

The building of the enclosure was built in the 16th century. With a length of 1700 meters, the ramparts had a wall walk. There were four main gates: Paris, Chartres, Etampes and the Puits des Champs.

About

In his column about Dourdan, Mr. Joseph Guyot said “We owe the Duke of Berry the fortification of Dourdan. The generalized use of the cannon required a new defence system. Dourdan was surrounded by a solid wall flanked by towers (…) There was a gap at the bottom of the walls, that is now filled and was replaced by the former flow of the Orge river in the inferior part of the town.”
“Only our main gates, flanked by turrets and a few false gates -like the Petit Huis and the Faubourg Groustreau ones- gave access to the town.” Today, except some parts that were demolished for various reasons, the walls still surround almost entirely the town.
