ExploreThis welcoming city in Gipuzkoa is nestled in a privileged location, on the foothills of the Sierra de Aralar mountains and on the slopes of Mount Txindoki.
When you arrive in the village, you will be surprised by the beauty of its urban centre. Just next to the town hall is the parish church of San Juan Bautista, dating from the 16th century, which preserves a Romanesque portal from the 13th century. Similarly, the Basque farms in the surrounding area are fascinatingly simple.
The most spectacular of Abaltzisketa is undoubtedly the Larraitz field, located at the foot of the Txindoki. We can visit the 18th century Larraitz hermitage. This charming place, located in the heart of nature, is one of the usual starting points for climbing the peaks of the Txindoki, Gambo or Pardarri.
The most important festivals in the area take place at the end of June, in honour of San Juan. On the 24th, a romería (patron saint's festival) was held next to the hermitage of Larraitz, and the music and good atmosphere flooded the place.
