ExploreThe sun is to morale what the air is to health
Taking advantage of an exceptional amount of sunshine of nearly 3000 hours of sunshine per year, a low level of humidity that provides healthy and dry air and an altitude of 1200 to 1800 metres, the first care establishments appeared at the end of the First World War. The wounded come to heal their wounds and their anguish in a serene and restorative climate, very quickly these centres are transformed into sanatoriums in order to heal tuberculosis patients. This disease was cured at that time by exposure to sunlight and clean air, and the climate of the cerdan plateau proved to be ideal for treating these respiratory diseases. These establishments were built in Les Escaldes, Font-Romeu, Odeillo, Odeillo, Osseja and Angoustrine, in short, throughout our territory.
Cerdanya sees many patients healed, it actively contributes to contain the scourge of tuberculosis and this long before the first antituberculosis treatments appear.
With the disappearance of tuberculosis, these establishments have been converted into the treatment of respiratory diseases, particularly childhood asthma, but also into a sports training centre, making Cerdagne the leading health resort in France.
